Overview
Canada’s healthcare system is a single-payer system that is publicly funded but
privately executed. The private healthcare industry fills any remaining gaps that are not
covered by the government. More than 90 percent of Canadians prefer their system to
that of the U.S. Inbound medical tourism is a steadily growing trend in Canada, with
American proximity fueling the ease and frequency of international visitors traveling to
Canada for healthcare. Toronto and its nearby specialty centers are a common
destination. Outbound medical tourism may be growing even faster than inbound traffic,
as an increasing number of Canadians are unwilling to wait for its country’s popular
services and often seek innovative treatments abroad before they become available
under provincial health plans.
