Overview
Argentina’s healthcare system is a mix of public and private, with the public portion
funded from tax revenue. More than 70 percent of the 5,000 healthcare establishments
in Argentina belong to the private sector, giving the nation huge potential as a medical
tourism destination. Argentina is arguably the most important destination for medical
tourism in South America. About half of its health tourists come from fellow Latin
American countries, with many of them traveling to the capital, Buenos Aires. Like other
Latin American destinations, it serves a healthy share of first-world travelers looking for
affordable cosmetic surgeries or other elective procedures; however, Argentina also
performs a comparatively large share of diagnostic and life-saving procedures.
Argentina catches the cusp of the MTI Top 20, thanks in part to good scores in the
Culture (8th) and Medical Tourism (14th) categories.
